  KALGOORLIE STAFF

Russell Cole - General Manager
Click to view enlargement. I graduated from WASM in Kalgoorlie in 1984, after working and studying part time. I commenced with WMC at the Lancefield Gold Mine’s Windarra Nickel Project and Hill 50. In 1988 I joined Pacontinental at Paddington as Senior Mining Engineer and later at Kundana as Underground Manager.

In 1993 I tried FIFO for a year at Wiluna as Underground Manager. After deciding that FIFO wasn’t the life for our family, we returned to residential living with Dominion at Meekatharra in 1994 and then at Mt Morgans as Mine Superintendent responsible for all mining operations. With the Plutonic takeover of Dominion I was promoted to General Manager at Lawlers. After almost 4 years with Dominion/Plutonic I left to join Sons of Gwalia in Southern Cross as General Manager.

After 18 months, John Shipp and KCGM enticed me back to Kalgoorlie with the Owner Mining Project at Fimiston. In 2005 I transferred to Barrick’s Cowal Gold Project in NSW as Operations Manager for the start up phase of the project.

Then again I was enticed back to Kalgoorlie, but this time with Goldfields at their St Ives Gold Mine as Operations Manager. In mid 2006 I was again asked to return to KCGM, this time as General Manager. My wife (Julie) and kids have always called Kalgoorlie home, so it is good to be home (again).

David Nicholson - Commercial & Administration Manager
Click to view enlargement. The newest manager to join the senior ranks of KCGM is David Nicholson, Commercial and Administration Manager. David and his family have traded the bright lights of Perth for the open spaces and bush surrounds of Kalgoorlie-Boulder and the Goldfields.

David has worked in a range of industries and roles. To name a few he was Executive Manager of Corporate Service for United Credit Union and Director of Corporate Services, at what was Anglican Homes.

His most recent endeavour before officially donning the KCGM colours was the owner of a management consultant company called 3D Strategic Solutions Pty Ltd. In this capacity David had previously worked at KCGM as a consultant. He was also no stranger to some of the KCGM staff as he’d completed his Executive MBA (Masters of Business Administration) at UWA in Perth, along side Russell Cole (KCGM GM), Kapila Karunaratna (previous KCGM Strategic Planning & CI Manager and soon to be back as Mining Manager) and Roy Almeida.

David is proud to be a Member of the Australian Institute of Company Directors, a Member of the Australian Institute of Management and a Fellow at the Australian Society of CPA’s (Certified Practising Accountants). As a Fellow, David took the opportunity to offer his industry experiences to budding CPA students in the form of a mentor and he currently mentors a Perth CPA student. This involves a catch up once a month to discuss any technical issues or problems the student may have as well as offering networking assistance. “I got where I am from the people who helped me, so it’s good to be able to put something back. I was lucky enough to have a mentor, so I know first hand how beneficial they can be,” said David. In addition David volunteers as a non-executive director of Skadada, which is a Perth based performing arts company.

Kapila Karunaratna - Mining Manager
Click to view enlargement. I am originally from Sri Lanka and studied Mining Engineering in Moscow, Russia. I was fortunate to work and enjoy different cultures in five continents in the mining field – Asia, Australia, Europe, and North & South America. After migrating to Australia in 1990, I worked with Newmont, Newcrest , Centaur, Barrick and KCGM. This is my third stint of work with KCGM in different capacities. Working and living in Kalgoorlie is a pleasure. I have a very challenging and interesting job. Everyday brings a different kind of challenge.
