Noise, blast vibration and blast overpressure are significant
environmental aspects to be managed by KCGM.
Through the historical development of Kalgoorlie-Boulder,
residential areas became established near the operations
preceding KCGM. Just prior to the formation of KCGM,
six underground mines on the Golden Mile operated "around
the clock". The noise environment changed with
the change of mining method to open pit operations.
In November 1992 Ministerial Conditions set noise-level
standards for the KCGM Fimiston Open Pit operation including
general noise levels and air-blast overpressure standards.
In 1993 following extensive study and discussion, KCGM
established noise, vibration and overpressure monitoring
and management programs for the Fimiston operation.
Blast vibration and seismic monitoring sites have also
been established by KCGM for the Mt Charlotte operations.
Data from these programs are reported to management
routinely to enable a pro-active approach and ensure
that potential issues are effectively managed.
