Shaft Backfilling

Since forming in 1989, KCGM has fenced and in-filled many historic and abandoned shafts and dangerous workings along the Golden Mile to make the area safer for the community. Shafts were initially fenced, however there is now a priority to infill these shafts closer to the city where members of the public can get access through damaged fences.

Shafts are backfilled using local rock material or waste from the Super Pit. For larger shafts, other methods such as concrete pads are used to cover the hole. A continuous monitoring and maintenance system is in place ensuring the shafts are checked regularly to prevent unauthorised access.
